20:30 – When did you start learning about SEO?

Ryan’s SEO journey started over ten years ago as a consultant for Deloitte. He always knew that it wasn’t the life that he wanted to live. Corporate America isn’t for him. Years later, he stumbled upon internet marketing (for what it’s called back then) and learned different lessons along the way. He’s learned a lot of important stuff about the marketing space, which ultimately paved the way for him to learn more about SEO in the following years.

26:50 – The Pain Was All Worth It!

When describing his work situation before he made it into the big league, Ryan had to endure painful situations during work. He went through a period of being uncomfortable, years & years of uncomfortable situations to get to the point where he could establish a self-sustaining business. For him, it was all worth it.

36:30 – Team Empowerment is Also KEY

According to Ryan, he was also empowering his team while doing business as it’s one of his goals to make his team potential leaders someday so it’ll benefit both him (the company) and the team (as individuals).

40:40 – Three Important Pillars from the Blueprint

According to Ryan, positioning, productization, and marketing apply to any business. These are the three pillars you can use to fortify your business in the growing market.

44:58 – How long did it take to write a book?

Ryan admittedly says that it took him three years to write his book because he was writing it all by himself. Each successful outline and chapter from the book was a product of Ryan’s dedication to sharing his hard-earned knowledge with the public. One of the most important lessons from the book was instilling “process” into your daily work routine.

49:40 – Why SEO and not paid ads?

One of the main reasons Ryan didn’t pursue doing paid ads before is that he doesn’t have a “process” to do it. According to him, he had a really good process in SEO which is why he’s winning a lot in the industry. If you didn’t know, Ryan emphasized how important process is in every aspect of work and life (you can read it from his book – SEO Blueprint!)

51:50 – Question from the audience: What would you say to someone looking to transition from freelancing to starting an agency?

For Ryan, there are several things that you need to understand and do. But it boils down to the following: One of the three pillars in marketing is knowing what your position in the market is and building that position. The second is production, and you just have to make sure that you’re doing something scalable and repeatable. In the end, it’s not about what we do, and it’s about what your clients need.

53:40 – Ryan’s tips for all budding SEO professionals

Focus on your craft. According to Ryan, it’s better to focus on one thing and be better at it. Especially in SEO, where positioning yourself plays a huge part in your road to success. If you want to start a career in SEO, it’s best to learn about it more and be better at it. Also, according to Ryan, this doesn’t mean that you should lack on the other elements; what he meant was to focus on one goal before moving on to the other.

56:03 – Another question from the audience: Apart from SEO skills, what other skills do you look for in a person to grow in the industry??

Aim to be a marketer, because for Ryan, learning the best marketing tactic for the company that you’re working for, with, or the company that you own will bring you steps ahead from your competition. Learning and understanding the best tactics to tackle the market is the best strategy you should develop while in the industry.
